Veteran baseball writer Carl Childress provides an in depth look at umpire fundamentals in a "double cover" text. Working the Plate
and Working the Bases offer information for every umpire. Carl's book deals with all aspects of umpiring, including game control and
attitude. Here's something he wrote about "skippers":
Coaches, managers: The ones we call for aren't as dumb or as crooked as we claim they are while we're sitting around the Dew Drop Inn after the game. For every Bobby Cox or Lou Piniella look-alike at our level, there are a hundred Joe Torre's and five hundred other amateur coaches who make Joe Torre look like Earl Weaver.
Our biggest headaches come because amateur coaches think that what they see on television is baseball. It isn't. It's Major League baseball, and often it has little resemblance to the game dictated by their amateur leagues.
We've heard that patience is a virtue. I think the English novelist Thomas Hardy said it best: "Patience is a blend of moral courage with physical timidity." You must be able to listen ("They also serve who only stand and wait.") without showing anger or belligerence. Goodness knows, you'll be provoked plenty in your career. Resist all temptation.
